By sorting the costs of waste management and environmental hazards stay reasonable
From the beginning of 1998 all buildings containing at least ten households were obligated to sort their waste in to five bins: biowaste, energywaste, collected carton, collected household paper and landfill waste. This matters in Lahti, Hollola, Heinola, Orimattila, Nastola and Asikkala. In June year 2000 the new regulations concerned all households in all 13 municipalities. Small estates were obligated to sort their waste to energywaste and landfill waste. By composting they are also able to adjust wastecontainer pickups.
Sorting out is worth doing because the payments of landfill waste treatments will raise every year.
40% of the weight of the household waste is organic. By sorting it out it can be composted. If taken to the landfill unsorted it will cause environmental hazards such as dirty water, poisonous and harmful gases (e.g. methane).
Carrying out the new regulations has started well. But there is still room for improvement. PAY ATTENTION!
To ease up your sorting you can get a wastebin unit with several containers for various waste. Or you can put many bags in one bin. Collected carton, collected paper and energy waste can be collected in paperbags.

Waste of your life – wasting of life?
Every person produces 209 kg of waste/year. During 70 years it means 14630 kg waste/person. During his/her lifetime a person produces waste 209 times his/her own weight.
What can you do to decrease the amount?
Environmental impacts of landfill:
- methane gas from organic waste strengthens greenhouse effect and increases the risks of landfillfires
- dirty leachate waters
- unsorted foodwaste brings gulls
Building up new landfillbasis costs 500 000 – 600 000 €/hectare.
