Waste management fees

COLLECTION FEES

In areas where property owners are responsible for organising waste management, fees for waste collection are agreed with the waste collection company. You can contact any waste collection company in your municipality for an offer.

In areas where the municipality arranges waste management, collection services are arranged via a tendering process and fees are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Päijät-Häme Waste Board. These areas are Kärkölä, Artjärvi in Orimattila and sparsely populated areas in Heinola and Sysmä with regard to energy and mixed waste, and the centres of Orimattila and Heinola with regard to biowaste.  Also, fees for regional collection points are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Päijät-Häme Waste Board Regional collection points are only available in areas where the municipality is responsible for waste management.

WASTE MANAGEMENT RATE

The waste management rate applies to the municipal household waste management activities. In addition, the rate applies to the collection of waste for which producers are responsible for arranging recycling, when this waste is generated by households located in areas where the municipality organises waste collection. The rates are applicable in the municipalities governed by the Päijät-Häme Waste Board. The waste board decides on the amount of the rates.

MUNICIPAL WASTE CHARGE (former called ECO-FEE)

In the area served by Päijät-Häme Waste Management, a household-specific municipal waste charge is charged for waste management services. Pursuant to Section 78 of the Waste Act (646/2011), this fee is invoiced once a year for all residential properties and holidayhouses that are in use or are usable, regardless of the quantity of waste generated. The grounds for the fee and its amount are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Päijät-Häme Waste Board. The funds accumulated via these fees are not used for daily waste management activities.

APPLICATION FOR CHANGING THE MUNICIPAL WASTE CHARGE OR WASTE MANAGEMENT RATE

In areas where the municipality arranges waste collection, fees are determined on the basis of the waste management rates, which are decided by the Päijät-Häme Waste Board (the regional waste management authority). The waste board also decides on any exceptions to the rates.

You can contact the waste board to apply for an exemption from the municipal waste charge, if

  • the building no longer exists (attach a tax certificate or a statement from an applicable authority) or
  • the building contains no apartment
  • if the building is uninhabitable (attach a statement from an applicable authority or pictures of the permanent structures)

The fee for a regional collection point may be reduced if the waste management service is not within easy reach, the building is not in use or if there is a block of buildings that form a joint courtyard which is used by the same household.

The decision is not influenced by the applicant’s age, health status, financial situation, or ownership of a vehicle, or by the number of residents in the property.

Applications for the reduction of a waste fee or exemption can be submitted in writing to the Päijät-Häme Waste Board at lahti.fi/jatelautakunta.
